I was deciding between WordPress and Drupal for my website CMS. Here are some key reasons why WordPress was the better choice for me:
1. Ease of use
WordPress: Known for its intuitive, user-friendly dashboard, making it accessible for beginners and non-technical users.
Drupal: Has a steeper learning curve and requires more technical expertise to manage content effectively.
2. Faster development and deployment
WordPress: Allows quick setup with easy installation, pre-built themes, and drag-and-drop page builders (like Elementor or Gutenberg).
Drupal: More flexible but requires custom development for many features, leading to longer development times.
3. Vast plugin and theme options
WordPress: Offers 60,000+ plugins and thousands of themes, making it easy to extend functionality without coding.
Drupal: Has fewer pre-built themes and modules, often requiring custom development to add features.
4. Cost-effectiveness
WordPress: Lower total cost of ownership due to affordable hosting, free themes, and widespread developer availability.
Drupal: More expensive due to custom development needs and specialized hosting requirements.
5. SEO and marketing
WordPress: Has built-in SEO-friendly features and powerful plugins like Yoast SEO and Rank Math.
Drupal: SEO capabilities are strong but require more manual configuration and additional modules.
6. Larger support community and resources
WordPress: Has a massive global community, making it easy to find tutorials, forums, and expert support.
Drupal: Has a smaller, more developer-focused community, meaning fewer beginner-friendly resources.
More hosting options
WordPress: Can run on virtually any hosting provider, with specialized WordPress hosting available.
Drupal: Requires more server resources and works best on dedicated or optimized hosting environments.
Easier maintenance
WordPress: Offers one-click updates for the core software, themes, and plugins.
Drupal: Updates often require manual intervention and developer expertise.
So what would make me choose Drupal Instead?
If I needed extreme customization, scalability, and security (e.g., government sites, enterprise portals), Drupal would make more sense. I’ve worked with Drupal before as a web strategist for a large government site that needed advanced user permissions and complex data structures (e.g., universities, large membership sites).
But this is a content-driven website with a blog. WordPress is the better choice due to its ease of use, affordability, and vast plugin ecosystem.
